World Heritage Tongariro National Park is just a stones throw from Ranfurly Cottage. Several great walks are available such as the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, the Round the Mountain track, Ruapehu Crater Climb, Tama Lakes and the Tongariro Northern Circuit.
Whanganui National Park is home to the Whanganui River canoe journey and the Bridge to Nowhere ride. The native flora and fauna is magnificent while the history of riverbank villages and WW1 settlers is interesting and thought-provoking.
